Astilbes have wonderful feathery flowers in mid summer on shiny green foliage. They are a perfect solution to damp, shady borders in the garden where other plants would struggle.
Mix in plenty of organic matter into the soil at planting, along with a solid fertiliser, feed regularly in the growing season, particularly at the beginning of the season when the new growth is established. Ensure the plants have plenty of water in the summer months, planting them in a damp position will enable them to flourish. At the end of the season allow them to die back naturally and cut the old foliage back to ground level in winter, early spring.
